Oral Health Care & Prevention: Brushing
Brushing
Proper brushing is one of the most critical aspects of maintaining your oral health. Using a toothbrush with soft and round-ended nylon bristles will ensure that your teeth do not get scratched and your gums are not irritated.
While maintaining a 45 degree angle and ensuring that the bristles of the toothbrush are in contact with both your teeth and gumline gently brush the outer surface of your teeth using back and forth rolling motions on both the outer and inner surfaces of your teeth. Use a vertical motion (up and down strokes) for your front teeth.
As for the biting surfaces of your teeth such as your molars, use a back and forth scrubbing motion. Last but not least, don’t forget to brush your tongue using a back and forth motion to remove as much of the odor causing bacteria as possible.
Another thing to remember, replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Thousands of microbes (both bacteria and viruses) can grow on the both the bristles as well as the handles of the toothbrush which can cause a range of maladies from periodontal infection to the flu.
