Oral Health Care & Prevention: TMJ Disorders
TMJ Disorders
The temporomandibular (tem-puh-roe-mun-DIB-u-lur) joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your jawbone to the rest of your skull. Since you have two of these joints (one on each side of your head) any issues with either of the joints can cause discomfort and even trouble opening your mouth. The causes of TMJ disorders typically include factors like genetics, arthritis or an injury of the jaw.
In most cases, TMJ problems can be managed without need for any surgical treatments. Surgery is only recommended when all other treatment options have failed.
Signs & Symptoms of TMJ disorder include:
- Locking of the jaw joint or trouble opening and/or closing your mouth
- Pain in one or both of the jaw joints
- Aching pain around the ear
- Difficulty and/or pain while chewing
- Aching facial pain
