Oral Cancer
Oral Cancer typically refers to cancers of the mouth and pharynx. The most common causes of oral cancer are smoking, heavy alcohol use or the combination of smoking and heavy alcohol use. Other factors that are linked to oral cancer include age, the HPV virus, Sun exposure and a diet low in fruits and vegetables. Oral cancers typically occur in people over the age of 40 and occurs more in men than women by a factor of almost two to one.
Signs & Symptoms of oral cancer include:
- A lump, sore, thick patch or persistent irritation in the lip, mouth or throat
- A white or red patch on the inside of your mouth
- A persistent irritation in the throat (as if something has been caught in your throat)
- Trouble Swallowing or chewing
- Trouble moving your tongue or lower jaw
- Numbness in your mouth or tongue
- Pain in one of your ears with no loss of hearing
- Swelling of the jaw
